The Great Marshmallow Rescue

In January of 2003 we started working with a woman who had two "albino" guinea pigs (really pink-eyed-whites). She did not separate the male from the female and they had had babies. She wanted help in placing them, and we agreed, and got her two little "marshmallows" to new homes. She kept one little girl to live with the mom, and the dad got a cage of his own. Unfortunately the babies were over 3 weeks old, and had never been separated... the little girl was already pregnant!

Then in February she called us again... she had "accidentally" let the boy in with the girls and both mom and daughter had had babies again. So we took some more. And then in March she neglected to separate the baby boys from their moms, and soon all the moms and daughters were pregnant AGAIN...

It was July 2003 before we were able to convince this woman to give up all her piggies and by then we had taken 9 pigs from her. She brought us 7 more, three of whom were pregnant and gave birth to 7 babies shortly after we got them. We ended up with a total of TWENTY THREE pink-eyed-whites!

By early 2004 we had only placed 8 of these pigs, and 2 had died (the severe inbreeding led to some of the pigs having very weak constitutions). We still had 13 to place; our task was made difficult by the fact they came to us neglected, abused, and wild.

It was 2007 before the last four marshmallows were adopted: Georgie & Snippet were adopted by their foster mom Geri, and Daisy & Shmousie were adopted by dads Mo & Nolan. Georgie, Snippet, and Daisy died in 2007 and 2008, and to our knowledge, Schmousie is the last surviving Marshmallow.
