The Jacksonville 48

This is why ACR&S does not take in owner surrenders:

On 6/18/2005 ACR&S and another rescue took in 48 pigs from Jacksonville, NC. We were told there were 10-20 rescued pigs, belonging to a 78 year old rescuer who had been hospitalized. Most were supposed to be over 4 years old. In fact, they were all young litters from a breeder dumping her excess stock. When we saw what the situation was, we told the breeder we could not help her. She threatened to dump them along the interstate if we did not take them.

ACR&S got 30 of the group, all males, most under 8 months, and Greener Side Rescue got 8 females and 10 males.

In addition to lying about the number and age of the pigs, the breeder also lied about their health. We were told most were healthy. In fact, all were ill with mites and an upper respiratory infection, many had broken or missing teeth from an inappropriate diet, most had wounds from overcrowding. The females were all already pregnant.

The breeder had the nerve to call back three months later and ask us to take another 20 or so pigs.

Many of these pigs were never adopted, and died of old age in our care. Three (#14, Timothy; #15, Tug; and #17, Blimpie) remain in the Sanctuary as of 2009.
